Cool Summer Treats Diabetic Seniors Can Enjoy

More than 15 million seniors have diabetes. That means that those seniors need to be careful about what they eat. In the summer when sugar filled treats like ice cream are everywhere, including at family gatherings, it can be tough for seniors to find sweet treats they can safely enjoy. If your senior loved one is diabetic you should always include some of these cool summer treats that are diabetic-friendly at family gatherings and keep some stocked in your senior loved one’s home too.

Homemade Popsicles

Homemade popsicles are delicious and just made from natural ingredients so it’s easier to control how much sugar they contain. If your senior loved one has senior home care they can make these popsicles themselves with a little help. All they need are some silicone molds, which they might already have. These are super easy to make. Just puree some fruit in a blender with a little water or fruit juice. Pour the puree into the molds and freeze. It’s fun to come up with different fruit combinations. And a little Greek yogurt can be added to if your senior loved one prefers them to be creamy. They’re the perfect cold naturally sweet treat for hot summer days.

Fruit Infused Water

Ok, so water may not technically be a treat but these fruit infused waters can be used to make amazing iced teas, lemonades, and mocktails with no alcohol. Using a fruit infusion pitcher your senior loved one or their senior home care provider can add slices of fruit and herbs to cold water to make deliciously refreshing drinks. A great one to try is adding lemon slices and culinary lavender to an infusion pitcher to make a delicious lavender lemon water. Add a little lemon sparkling water to the mix to make a very refreshing and delicious cool summer spritzer.

Sorbet

Another naturally sweet treat that diabetic seniors can enjoy is a sorbet. Sorbet is easy to make at home or there are version for sale at the store that use artificial sweeteners that are better for diabetics than real sugar. Just make sure that your senior loved one or a care provider checks the label carefully to make sure that the ingredients are just fruit and a sweetener and it has no other additives. Making sorbet at home is a great way to use up fruit that might be starting to go bad so it doesn’t go to waste.

Frozen Grapes

Frozen grapes are the perfect summer snack for diabetic seniors. Grapes contain a lot of water so they can help seniors stay hydrated. They are also naturally sweet but low in calories. Wash some seedless grapes and put them in the fridge to stay cold or in the freezer. Either way they are a wonderful sweet cold treat on a hot summer day. They can be eaten as a snack between meals or as dessert after dinner. Frozen grapes can also be used in place of ice cubes to keep drinks cold at summer parties and barbecues.
